An inside look at marketing consultancy: What is it and how can it help?

You’ll probably hear many people talk about their consultancy offers in the online space all of the time, but I’m guessing that when you do, several questions pop up.

Specifically:

What actually happens in a consultancy session? And how is a one or two-hour session of talking going to help me or my business?

If you’ve ever asked these questions, you’re in the right place! I’m going to break down exactly what consultancy sessions look like!

For the purpose of this blog, I’m going to use my content planning consultancy sessions as an example, specifically, using these sessions to strategise and map out your social media content because this is what a lot of people use my content planning consultancy sessions for.

However, I want to make it clear from the get-go that my content planning consultancy services aren’t limited to just planning out social media. We can discuss anything to do with your content marketing so that includes things like blogs, email newsletters, Facebook ads content, or even planning out the content to support your podcasts!

With all of that being said, let’s look at what really happens when you book a consultancy session with me!

Before the session

Before we jump on to the actual consultancy call, you’ll have a few questions to answer about you and your business.

It’s not a long questionnaire but it just gives me an overview of what you do, what you’re currently struggling with and your goals for the next few months! Essentially, it’s a way for me to get a bird's eye view of where you’re currently at and where you want to go.

This enables me to make the most out of the sessions and provide the best support.

Before we have our session, I’ll also create an Airtable base for you (using your email address so you have complete ownership of it after our session) that we can use for support during our content planning session!

If our session is going to be for social media, I’ll set up different tabs that will come in handy such as a space for a content bank for us to dump content ideas into, a content calendar for us to follow and I’ll also leave space for us to note what type of post each content piece will be (for example, a static post, IG story or reel etc.) and allocate space for the data content should be posted and the topics of each content piece.

The reason I do this is so that during our call we can fill this out so you know exactly what content you have to create and what you need to action, and when so after the call, you don’t lose track!

During the session

At the start of the call, I make sure to touch base to get a few more details on your services, your target audience and your focus for the next month so we can strategically plan content that is aligned with your goals.

We’ll also look at what consistency means for you. I’m not going to help you to plan out 7 posts a week, 20 stories and 4 reels if that’s not sustainable for you!

These sessions are all about creating an attainable schedule for you.

For the rest of the session, we plan out in detail a month's worth of social media content, including every post, story and poll! This includes the title of each piece, the topics to cover and when and where to post.

By the end of the session, you’ll have a cohesive content plan to follow for the next month to help fully nurture and convert your audience.

After the call

Once our call has finished, you’ll be left with a fully set up Airtable base that is filled with everything you need to start creating all of your social media content for the next month!

I’ll also leave you with some tips on how to stay consistent and recommendations on the platforms you can use to set up reminders to keep you on track. My biggest recommendation for this is always ClickUp and if you want to find out how I use this to manage my social media content creation process, you can read this blog!

So there you have it!

Essentially, my content planning consultancy sessions are here to give you someone to brainstorm and strategise with, to help the ideas flow and to guide your content creation so that when it comes to creating all of your content yourself, you know exactly how to do so in a way that attracts your ideal clients and grows your business!
